Murano Art Italy
Glass, fire and a thousand years
Who we are
Made in Venice, at home in Rome
Murano Art Italy is a family business with two homes. Our glass is born in Venice, on the island of Murano, where master glassmakers cut, fuse and finish every piece by hand. Our store is in Rome, a short walk from the Spanish Steps, where you can see the pieces in person, hold them to the light and take your time choosing.
We bring the paintings we love most, from Klimt and Van Gogh to Monet and Degas, and the places we love, from Venice to Rome and the Amalfi Coast, into glass, one piece at a time. No two pieces are ever alike.
The tradition
Born in the lagoon, kept on one island
Glass has been made in the Venetian lagoon for more than a thousand years, longer than almost any other craft still alive in Europe.
In 1291 the Republic of Venice moved every furnace to Murano, to protect the city from fire and to keep the secrets of the craft in one place. They have never left.
The recipes, the tools and the gestures are still passed from one generation to the next, by hand and by eye, as they have been for centuries.
Inside the furnace
Sand, minerals and fire
Murano glass begins as sand, soda and lime, melted at well over a thousand degrees. Colour comes from minerals added to the mix: cobalt for blue, gold for ruby red, manganese for violet. The exact recipes are handed down inside each workshop.
How our pieces are made
From a painting to a piece of glass
01
The drawing
It starts with a painting or a place we love, redrawn line by line so that every colour becomes its own shape.
02
The cut
Sheets of coloured Murano glass are cut by hand, one shape at a time, and laid together like a mosaic.
03
The fire
The composition goes into the kiln, where the pieces fuse into a single sheet. This is the glass fusion technique.
04
The hand
Outlines and details are added by hand and each piece is finished and checked before it leaves Venice for Rome, or for your home.
Made in Italy
Made in Murano, never twice the same
Every piece is original Murano glass, made entirely by hand in Italy by master glassmakers. Sizes, colours and patterns can vary slightly from one piece to the next: the dimensions shown on each product page are approximate, and a plate, a sculpture or a totem can differ by a few centimetres. These differences are not defects. They are what makes each piece one of a kind.
